Our assembly line to build Operation Christmas Child (OCC) boxes is one of a kind. It starts with a project. The project could be unpacking items purchased or given to us, like socks or soap. Other times, it’s an item we build or assemble. Here’s an example of such a project: Pencil Packs. This project combines pencils, sharpeners, erasers, pens, combs and crayons into a hand-made pencil case that children can use for school. Most children cannot attend school unless they bring their own supplies. Once complete, these items go on the line for all ages.
Next up, we start each box with either a regular shoe box, a pre-made plastic box, or a folded paper box. They are all about the same size. It’s fun watching volunteers decorate their box, adding stickers, or writing ‘you are loved’ text on the inside of each box cover.
Then, every box gets a bar of soap, a washcloth, a letter from us, a book, a deck of cards, and a toothbrush. These are key items we want every child to get. In some cases, whole families share a toothbrush, so it’s important to us that every child get one of these to call their own.
From here, you decide, am I building for a ‘boy’ or a ‘girl’?…and their age group. Each 9 bin “Pod” contains all the items you need for your box: paper, school supplies, a shirt, socks, toys, a hat, a bag, a stuffed toy and additional small toys. Each of these are carefully made so they can fit easily inside the box. One of the teachers told us that children often find their gift in life through “play”, so it’s important we give them fun toys they can share with other children like soccer balls, baseballs, trucks, tools, dolls, and so on…
Lastly, we wrap it all up with a rubber band, and a sticker. This ensures that every box is unique and built specifically for the child you are going to send it to. It’s truly amazing how God can match the child or their family up with the gifts they receive. Every box is stacked, then prayed over before heading out to the processing center.
